How to Extend Your Teeth Whitening Results
Who doesn't want a brighter, sparkling smile? Thanks to teeth whitening, it's never been easier to get your teeth looking their best.
Whether you choose our Zoom in-office teeth whitening procedure that can be completed in just two appointments or elect to use an at-home teeth whitening kit over a couple of weeks, the team at Avalon Dental can provide the right treatment for you. In order to maintain your teeth's new brightness as long as possible, it's important to follow the tips below.
Watch out for staining
Certain foods such as pasta sauce and berries as well as spices like curry and even balsamic vinegar contribute to the discoloration of your teeth. Tea, coffee, wine, soda, and sports drinks can also lead to damage and staining.
Reducing or eliminating these foods and beverages can go a long way toward keeping your teeth white and sparkling. If you do consume them, be sure to rinse your mouth or brush your teeth within a half an hour (or as soon as possible). Consider using a straw to drink so the liquids don’t come into contact with your front teeth.
Smoking is also a culprit in staining teeth. If you smoke, try to quit or at least cut down.
Practice good dental hygiene
You should brush your teeth twice a day — in the morning and before going to bed — at a minimum. For best results, brush after all meals and snacks to prevent extended exposure to foods and beverages that can cause staining and dim your teeth whitening results. You should also floss at least once a day to remove the plaque that can collect between your teeth and along your gumline and encourage discoloration.
A whitening toothpaste may also help keep your smile bright. Be sure to look for one with a seal of approval from a reputable organization like the American Dental Association, and follow the label instructions on how often to use it.
Visit your dentist
Regular dental cleanings and exams can help extend the life of a tooth whitening procedure. Hygienists can not only remove plaque but also polish away surface stains to reduce discoloration.
